At Hempfield Animal Hospital, we believe that prevention is the best medicine you can provide for your animal companion.
Routine wellness care provides a foundation on which your pet can enjoy a lifetime of good health. Wellness exams provide us with the opportunity to get to know you and your pet better and to answer any questions or discuss any concerns you may have.
Wellness exams also allow us to gather an accurate picture of your pet's overall health. This allows us to monitor any changes so that any potential concerns can be addressed in a timely manner, and slow down the development of a more serious condition.
Puppy & Kitten Exams
We recommend any newly adopted puppy or kitten be examined as soon as possible to assess their health. Once they are examined, we can recommend or begin their appropriate vaccine series. Puppies and kittens will need a series of boosters before they become annual vaccines. Fecal examinations are recommended at each of these appointments due to the life cycle of parasites. Positive fecal samples can be quite common among puppies and kittens and is easily treatable!
Comprehensive Wellness Exams
Annual exams are important to help ensure the health of your pet and to keep an up-to-date client-patient relationship. All animals should be seen at least once a year for a comprehensive exam. Patients over the age of 7 years old are recommended to be seen with preventative screening blood work every 6 months. The sooner we notice any changes; the sooner we are able to intervene and hopefully prolong your pet's life. At your pet's exam, we will assess your pet's general health status including skin, musculoskeletal system, heart and lungs, GI, urogenital, eyes, ears, neurology, lymph nodes, dental health and administer necessary vaccines against life-threatening diseases. A fecal sample and a heartworm and tick-borne disease test is also standard to complete the full picture.
Dental Services
Your pet's teeth need care too! Dental health in pets can interfere with other bodily systems. With our dental unit, we will start with cleaning and polishing your pet's teeth. We then move on to full-mouth x-rays for all dentals. Our digital dental radiography can further help us in evaluating your pet's oral health both above and below* the gumline, where we can't see upon exam. In addition, we perform all necessary extractions and minor oral surgery. There are some patients have extensive dental disease in which is not able to be addressed in one surgery. We take anesthesia and patient comfort very seriously and therefore may require dentals in stages.
Surgical Services
Our surgical services include spays, neuters, growth removals and soft tissue surgeries, abdominal surgeries such as blockages and pyometras, and cystotomies. Pricing estimates available upon request after the patient is seen. All surgeries require a $150 non-refundable deposit to schedule.

Diagnostic Imaging
On-site ultrasound is an offering unique to a practice of our size. This imaging provides a look at abdominal organs, allowing quick and effective decision-making without going offsite. We also use our ultrasound to visualize the bladder for taking sterile urine samples. Urine can be easily contaminated by the environment and an ultrasound-guided cystocentesis is an easy way to ensure correct diagnostic results.

Digital X-ray is another distinctive of our clinic. Not only can we provide this level of imaging quickly and easily, but we share those images with you to discuss implications for next steps.

Diagnostic Testing
Our in-house laboratory tests include standard serum chemistry and complete blood counts. In addition, we can test Heartworm, Lyme and other tick-borne diseases, feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) status. Through in-house microscopic examination, we can test for intestinal parasites and external parasites through skin scrapings. An outside laboratory is used for more specialized testing, with results typically the next day.
Laser Therapy
Our on-site laser therapy is an ideal treatment option for a wide variety of situations. This gentle bio-stimulation promotes relief for chronic and acute pain, wound healing, treatment for infections and post-surgical healing from incisions, dental extractions, tissue recovery and more.

Senior Services
Early disease detection is important for treating or slowing down severe disease to prolong your pet's life. At comprehensive senior examinations, we assess the general health of your older pet and detect potential health problems before they become more difficult and expensive to treat.

We always recommend bloodwork and discuss options for preventative care and pain management (such as with arthritis). Geriatric pets should ideally be examined every 6 months with blood work, especially those with known chronic health issues (such as heart disease, asthma, renal failure) or those on any chronic medication.
Laser therapy is also an ideal treatment option for older pets who can't tolerate certain medications for inflammation or orthopedic issues.
Solensia
Solensia is a monthly injection administered at our office that can help control the pain your cat may experience from osteoarthritis. Solensia is a biologic medication that is not filtered through your pet's liver or kidneys. For more information regarding Solensia please click the banner below:

Librela is a monthly injection administered at our office that can help control the pain your dog may experience from osteoarthritis. We offer a variety of Purina prescription diets for the specific needs of your pet. Please ask your veterinarian for an appropriate dietary recommendation.

Prescription Medication
For those pets requiring medication, we provide a well-stocked pharmacy. We also carry heartworm preventatives, flea and tick preventatives, ear medications, and shampoos. Our knowledgeable staff can provide real-time input and assistance about your pet's medication needs. Please be advised any new medications or things like antibiotics are required to see the doctor for full medical evaluation to ensure the correct prescription for your pet's specific needs.

Euthanasia
Caring for a pet toward the end of his or her life is the most difficult period for every pet owner (and veterinary staff member). We understand and aim to provide the best experience possible during this time. We approach each situation with compassion. A private room is offered, and pets receive pain medication/mild sedative ahead of time to ensure a smooth and peaceful transition.
